History says we go from periods of low productivity to periods of high productivity. Nothing is in the bank at this time of consequence, but if the last four quarters are an indication, which is really largely before the advent of the new ​surge in what artificial intelligence can do, there’s reason to be optimistic. At the same time, evidence of a structural pickup in productivity growth remains surprisingly fragile: Aggregate productivity growth has improved during the post-pandemic period, but there is a strong rationale to attribute much of this improvement to cyclical variation in utilization rather than a sustained acceleration in productive capacity. Assuming an eight-hour workday, the average AI adopter has gone from roughly 20 minutes of usage in late 2024 to around 30 minutes by mid-year 2026, the RPS survey shows. The implication is that time saved per working day has risen from about seven minutes in 2024 to about 10 minutes in 2026. Across a nation’s workforce, that’s a decently valuable efficiency. US business-sector productivity has improved in recent years, on aggregate, which might be because of the benefits awarded to chatbot early adopters. During 2022-24, labor hoarding appears to have depressed measured productivity as firms retained workers despite moderating demand. Companies in finance, IT, education, management consulting and professional services have been early adopters. Retail, entertainment, healthcare and transportation companies have been less enthusiastic. It follows that improved productivity would be stronger among the first group. What’s missing for now is evidence that the improvements they’re making are moving the dial nationally. "}],[{"start":370.95,"text":"A Fed Board of Governors discussion paper published last week takes the approach of bunching industries together by high, medium and low AI adoption. It finds that “productivity trends across all three levels have been relatively consistent over time, suggestive of micro-level productivity gains not adding up in aggregate”:"}],[{"start":393.05,"text":"One possible reason for the divergence is that micro-level experiments typically measure task-level productivity, like the speed a programmer generates code, rather than job-level or firm-level output. A 10% improvement on a task does not necessarily lead to proportional gains for a firm if adjustment costs or other bottlenecks lie elsewhere in the production process and erode the upstream productivity gains. Another reason could be that experiments finding gains for information-sector roles leave open the question what AI could mean for productivity in other sectors where work looks very different. [ . . . ] Productivity growth is not homogenous across industries, and AI uptake in low exposure industries such as construction will not necessarily lead to the same productivity gains as in high exposure sectors such as information."}],[{"start":440.5,"text":"The Barclays team goes further. By running a series of complicated regression analyses on RPS survey data, it finds no evidence that AI’s doing anything positive: correlations between industry-level adoption rates and improvements in productivity are “not statistically distinguishable from zero”, it says. Every bubble also causes a heap of effort to be diverted towards anti-productive slurry. The few people arguing otherwise have something to sell. From manufacturing automation to online retailing, upstart innovators have historically squeezed out an old guard that refuses to die quickly. Maybe open models shift the balance of power to where power’s most plentiful. Maybe societies reorganise for post-scarcity, post-knowledge, post-trust, or whatever. It’s much more fun to spitball this stuff than to look at Bureau of Labor Statistics data, on which there’s still no evidence strong enough to hang any sort of theory. Whatever’s happening might just be starting, or might never start. It’s a banal observation.
