The ethical perils of gene therapy

A case in China shows the dangers associated with this groundbreaking treatment

Gene therapy involves flooding the affected organ with copies of a healthy gene to compensate for a dysfunctional one (viruses are usually used to piggyback the healthy copies in). Genome editing, also called gene editing and often using Crispr technology, makes precise edits by snipping out and sometimes replacing the rogue gene."}],[{"start":57.72,"text":"Last year, personalised gene therapy made headlines for “curing” an infant, known as KJ, of a potentially fatal genetic metabolic disorder (he will need life-long monitoring). The specific approach used on KJ, called base editing — which chemically changes one DNA base letter to another — had caught Qiu’s attention. Mei needed just such a letter change to correct a mutation in the CHD3 gene, which affects neuron development. Qiu told Mei’s parents that the brain-directed gene therapy would be a world first."}],[{"start":88.2,"text":"But three days after the injection into her spinal fluid, a jab packed with trillions of viruses to transport the base-editing instructions to the brain, Mei developed a fever. Her kidneys shut down, and she died days later. Several experts consulted by Science queried whether the animal data justified proceeding.
